UCF Creol Building HVAC System Renovations


Moses Engineering was retained to analyze chronic Center for Research in Electro-Optics and Lasers (CREOL) Building humidity problems. Selected testing and a detailed analysis revealed that the building was under negative pressure due to fume hood additions. In addition, the original VAV controls and electric heat had failed in many labs.

Further analysis revealed that none of the labs using chemicals had one pass air or separation as required by code. Recommendations were made to correct all operational and code issues in a phased manner so that the building could remain occupied.


Moses Engineering designed a new penthouse containing a 100% outdoor air handling unit (AHU), condensing hot water boilers, pumps and a process cooling water heat exchanger with dedicated pumps. The penthouse is a modular, fabricated custom unit to be erected with minimal building disruption. The new AHU will serve new dedicated shared fume hood rooms, as well as existing labs being renovated to meet code requirements. The condensing boilers (in lieu of electric heat), the process cooling water (in lieu of chilled water), and variable volume laboratory supply and exhaust systems reduced energy use substantially.
