UM Neuroscience & Health Annex

Moses Engineering has developed a long term working relationship with the University of Miami. Over eight years, Moses Engineering has led over 25 renovation projects in the 183,000 SF Cox Science Building. So, when UM decided to pursue an NIH Grant for a Neuroscience & Health Annex, Moses Engineering was asked to lead the technical proposal. The $15,000,000 grant application was won, and Moses Engineering was asked to lead the design and construction administration of the project with an Architect consultant.

The 36,000 SF, four story addition (includes mechanical penthouse) is currently under construction. The facility provides for collaborative research needs, including a fMRI suite, wet labs, TEM/SEM suites, and vivarium. Design challenges included: complementing the existing Cox Science Building, rerouting campus utilities, and meeting stringent NIH Design Requirements within the budget.

At the Owner’s request, Moses Engineering held the Contract and coordinated all architectural, structural, civil and landscape architecture consultants, as well as serving as LEED Administrator. In a more traditional role, Moses Engineering designed all MEPF systems, successfully satisfying NIH requirements for redundancy and design mandates within budget. Energy efficient designs include: fan wall AHUs, desiccant wheel heat recovery, VAV laboratory controls, lighting controls, and solar hot water for vivarium cage and rack washer.
